About

Huh! It seems like a lifetime ago, and yet a blink of the eye, that this journey began, without even realizing it. In 2004 I consented, after hours of unsuccessful pushing, to a c-section. That set a new course for my life – one that incorporated motherhood, research, and advocacy into a big messy pile. In 2008 I attended the Summer Vocology Institute where I fastidiously consumed all of the high-level knowledge that I could regarding the intersections between science and singing. I was already aware of the term, evidence-based, from my birth research, but I began to use it intuitively as I built questions about the successes and inadequacies of my own field. This culminated into a presentation for a workshop in 2013 where I proposed a model for my field – Evidence Based Singing.

I have aspired to be a top-tier classical singer. I have aspired to be a celebrated teacher and mentor. I have aspired to make my mark in voice science. I’m ambitious, yes, and full of big ideas. However, executing ideas and ambitions sucks! You have to have a discipline that eludes me, a willingness to “put yourself out there” that repels me, and a confidence that I suspect a lot of people like me find… has evaporated over the years. Furthermore, you have to push the button.

I’m ready now. I am willing now. You’ll find that this blog will explore the background of the term, evidence-based, refer to the inspiration for applying this term, links to materials that I have shared at conferences and presentations in my field, and explore current and future areas of singing that can be transformed by this model.
